The only goal was scored in the 39th minute, when Jefferson Lerma scored with an accurate shot after a pass by James Rodríguez.
The Colombians were already in the minority in first-half stoppage time due to Daniel Munoz’s second yellow card, but Uruguay did not capitalize for the rest of the game as the match ended in Colombia’s favor.
After the final whistle, several Uruguayan players got into a fight with fans behind their team’s bench.
The Colombians will face Argentina, who beat Canada 2-0 in the semifinals, in the final on Sunday.
The Argentine national team can repeat the historic achievement of the Spanish national football team, which won three major tournaments in a row between 2008 and 2012 – two European Championships and the World Cup. The Argentines are the current South American and world champions.
The South American Championship or “Copa America” is being held in 14 US cities this year and will run until July 14. It is one of the stages of preparation for the 2026 World Cup final tournament, which the USA will host together with Canada and Mexico.
Argentina won the championship held three years ago, beating hosts Brazil 1-0 in the final.
