These shortcomings include the module’s inability to handle the mass and inertial characteristics of the three-ton FAB-3000 bomb, which often results in highly inaccurate strikes, a problem not seen with the smaller FAB-1500 bomb. Therefore, the new UMPK will have larger aerodynamic rudders and more powerful propulsion equipment specially developed for the FAB-3000.

It is believed that the expected improvements of the updated UMPK will allow the FAB-3000 to operate more accurately and efficiently in future operations in Ukraine.

The UMPK is a modular attachment for use with unguided aerial bombs. This module effectively turns normal free-fall bombs into precision-guided munitions while increasing their range.

When launched from an aircraft, the module deploys its wings and guides the bomb to pre-specified coordinates using an integrated inertial system with GPS correction, according to Defense Blog.

Bombs equipped with the UMPK module are increasingly being used in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Such bombs are relatively inexpensive to manufacture, costing less than $20,000 each, making them a cost-effective solution compared to more sophisticated precision-guided munitions such as cruise missiles.

FAB-3000 is a high-explosive bomb, 1946. developed for Tu-4 bombers, later equipped with Tu-16 and Tu-22. It weighs three tons and is more than three meters long, and its explosive mass is 1.4 tons. The bomb has three detonators.

Ukrainian forces face significant challenges in combating these advanced bombs due to their greater range and accuracy, according to Army Recognition.
