US President Joe Biden reiterated on Monday that he will not back down from his reelection bid despite concerns about his age and poor performances in televised debates, following calls from some Democratic colleagues for him to drop out of the race, particularly over concerns about losing to former President Donald Trump.

In an address to congressional Democrats returning to Washington after the Independence Day celebration, Biden, 81, stressed his determination to continue the fight: “I am determined to stay in this race, to see it through to the end, and to defeat Donald Trump.”

Biden also called for unity ahead of the Democratic National Convention in 42 days and the general election 119 days from now, stressing that “any weakening of resolve or lack of clarity about the task ahead only benefits Trump and hurts us.”

Amid the debate over a possible replacement for the Democratic nominee, names have been floated including Vice President Kamala Harris and California Governor Gavin Newsom, who polls show are trailing Trump by several percentage points. However, Biden remains the preferred candidate for many in the party, seen as able to unite the party’s various wings.
