Drivers blocked taxi transport in Athens with a 24-hour strike. They are demanding the withdrawal of a draft law which, according to them, threatens the safety of passengers.

No taxis operate in the entire Attica area. A large number of cars take part in a protest demonstration in front of the Ministry of Transport and in front of the Ministry of Tourism.

Today’s protest, according to a union statement, is against a government project to allow international companies to use rental cars for taxi services. The ability of the control bodies to check the drivers for the presence of registration for taxi transport is actually limited, participants in the protests told the media. This will worsen the quality of the service and the safety of the passengers, the trade union insists, BNR writes.

For the immediate withdrawal of the draft law, the Greek taxi drivers insist and continue the strike until tomorrow morning.

The lack of taxis has led to overloaded public transport and heavy traffic in the Attica region.
