RECOGNITION
The Provincial Board of the Red Cross of Chimborazo awarded certificates and recognitions to voluntary blood donors in commemoration of World Blood Donor Day. The event, which highlighted the altruism and constant help of these donors in saving lives, took place in the Miss Esthela Falconí auditorium in Riobamba.
Viviana Segura, promoter of Blood Donation Campaigns, stressed the benefits of donating blood, mentioning that this practice “reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases and stimulates the production of new blood cells.” Dr. Mancheno, in his acceptance speech, highlighted the importance of this event for civil society, underlining the ongoing efforts of the Red Cross to increase blood donations for the benefit of the most vulnerable population. “This event is essential for the entire community and for those of us who work hard to increase blood donation,” he said.
The donors present received a certificate and a gift from the staff of the Chimborazo Provincial Board of the Red Cross. “This event aims to recognize all the donors who support us continuously,” said Segura, who also explained that men can donate blood every three months and women every four months. She added that, although these recognitions are normally held on June 14, World Blood Donor Day, this year the event was delayed due to special campaigns. “On June 14 we carried out a massive campaign and collected around 200 pints of blood,” she said.
Segura also emphasized the importance of blood donation both locally and globally.
Despite the efforts, the goal is not always reached. However, day after day work is done to raise awareness among the population. Every month, the Chimborazo Red Cross closes with an average of 700 to 800 donors.
