The Ukrainian president has accepted that his country’s NATO membership will not be established while there is a war on its territory

The Ukrainian president expressed his understanding that Ukraine will not become a member of NATO as long as there is a war on its territory. Volodymyr Zelenskiy spoke about this at a joint press conference with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg in Washington on Thursday before the meeting of the NATO-Ukraine Council.

The head of state of Ukraine promised: Kiev will do everything in the future to ensure that, when the day comes and it receives an invitation from NATO, membership can take place. At the same time, he called the words in the declaration of the NATO summit adopted on Wednesday about the “irreversibility” of the Ukrainian membership process a strong wording.

Volodymyr Zelensky believed that Ukraine’s NATO membership would bring success to both parties. Ukraine is strengthening NATO – explained the Ukrainian president and said that “we have strong people and a strong army, and it is fighting against a tyrant, Putin.”

In response to a question, the Ukrainian president said that he did not know about Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s visit to Moscow and then to Beijing, which followed their meeting in Kiev. In this regard, Jens Stoltenberg stated that the leaders of the various allied countries meet with different political leaders, and it is not NATO’s task to dictate with whom the leaders of the member states meet. What matters to NATO is that all members agree on a common policy, and on Wednesday a very strong statement was made by all 32 allies, the NATO Secretary General emphasized.

At the press conference, Jens Stoltenberg and Volodymyr Zelenskiy both argued that restrictions on the use of weapons received from abroad should be reduced for Ukraine, and that they could also be used against targets in Russia.

According to the NATO Secretary General, it is part of Ukraine’s right to self-defense to target military targets in Russia, and he pointed out that several member states have already eased the restrictions they had previously imposed. Jens Stoltenberg explained that the war front line at Kharkiv almost coincides with the border of the two countries, which also means that the Russian military targets from which attacks on Ukraine are launched are located on Russian territory.
