In a remarkable development on the southern front of Syria, the Israeli army announced on Wednesday that its tanks had bombed Syrian army targets in the Golan Heights area.

“Earlier today, the IDF fired tank and artillery fire at Syrian military structures that violated the 1974 disengagement agreement between Israel and Syria in the buffer zone,” army spokesman Avichay Adraee said on the X platform.

“The IDF holds the Syrian army responsible for anything that happens on its territory and will not allow attempts to violate the disarmament agreement,” the army said in a statement, a day after an Israeli couple was killed by a Hezbollah rocket fired at the Golan Heights.

On Tuesday, the Israeli police announced the killing of two people in the Golan Heights as a result of rockets fired from Lebanon, in a new episode of the months-long exchange of shelling between Hezbollah and the Israeli army.

The deaths came shortly after the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights announced that at least two people were killed in an Israeli attack that targeted a Hezbollah vehicle in Syria.

According to a source close to Hezbollah, one of the two people killed in the Israeli strike previously worked as an aide to the party’s Secretary-General, Hassan Nasrallah, according to Agence France-Presse.

The Israeli army indicated that “about 40 rockets were fired from Lebanon towards the central Golan Heights, and a number of them were observed falling in the area.”

Since the outbreak of war between Israel and Hamas on October 7 in the Gaza Strip, Hezbollah and Israel have exchanged cross-border shelling on an almost daily basis.

From time to time, Israel launches strikes on Hezbollah targets in Syria.

The exchange of fire between Israel and Hezbollah, which has been ongoing for more than nine months, has resulted in the deaths of at least 500 people in Lebanon, including 95 civilians and 328 Hezbollah members, according to a count by Agence France-Presse based on Hezbollah data and official Lebanese sources.

The Israeli side announced the killing of 29 people, most of whom were soldiers.
