A member of the Musavat Party, he lived as a political émigré in Germany for many years Mehdi Khalilbayli was arrested. It is reported that he was detained at Baku airport in April, when he was coming to Azerbaijan from Germany.

“When he entered the country, it was reported that he was wanted during the passport check. An employee of the border service detained him and handed him over to the prosecutor’s office. He has been in Kurdakhani – Baku Pre-trial Detention Center for almost two months.”– his relatives told Azadlig Radio.

M. Khalilbeyli is 54 years old. He was wanted in October 2003 due to protests related to the results of the presidential election. In connection with those events, the police officer was charged with articles 233 (organizing or participating in acts that cause a violation of public order), 221 (hooliganism) and 315 (resisting a representative of authority, using force) of the Criminal Code. He is accused of injuring Sahil Karimli, an employee of “Leader TV” during the protests.

M. Khalilbeyli was sentenced to 3 months’ imprisonment for the preliminary investigation period. This information was confirmed to Azadlig Radio by Binagadi District Court.

M. Khalilbeyli, a member of the European Coordination Center (ECC) of the Musavat Party, was arrested in 2019 as part of investigations related to the organization of illegal migration cases (immigrant trafficking) in Germany, and was released in January 2020.

After the events of October 2003, there were mass arrests in Azerbaijan. Among those arrested were the former chairman of the Musavat Party, Arif Hajili, the chairman of the Umid Party, Iqbal Aghazade, the editor-in-chief of the “Yeni Musavat” newspaper, Rauf Arifoglu, and others.
