Damage to 9,522 ha of crops and 340,000 livestock
Central region expected to experience three days of intense heat
40-year-old missing from Gyeongsan irrigation canal found dead
A medical student who had gone on a field trip to Iksan, Jeollabuk-do, was confirmed to have gone missing in the heavy rain on the 10th, and the police and fire department have begun a search. As damage to rice paddies and livestock products due to the unprecedented heavy rain increases, an emergency light has been turned on for food prices.
According to the Jeonbuk Provincial Police Agency and others on the 11th, a report was received at around 11:00 AM the previous day that “Friend A (22) went out of his dorm at dawn and has not been contacted.” A, who is attending a medical school in Jeonbuk, is reported to have gone to a pension in Geumma-myeon, Iksan-si with about 20 members of his school club on the 9th. The police estimate that A left the pension around 4:00 AM on the day of his disappearance. At the time, heavy rain of 60-80 mm per hour was falling in the area. It is reported that the other 20 college students who came with A were drunk and asleep.
Police and fire officials searched the surrounding area, including the drain and road, immediately after the report was made, but have not found Mr. A as of the 11th. A police officer said, “When Mr. A came out of the pension, water had already overflowed from the drain and the road was flooded.”
The search for Mr. B, a man in his 70s who went missing after being swept away by floodwaters from a farm container in Simcheon-myeon, Yeongdong-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do on the 10th, has been ongoing for the second day. As of 2:00 p.m. on the 11th, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced that as of this month’s heavy rains, there were five deaths and one missing. A woman in her 40s who went missing after being swept away by a torrential downpour in an irrigation canal in Gyeongsan-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do on the 9th and was found dead three days later, and a man in his 70s who died in a car crash in Okcheon-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do on the 10th were not included in the tally because they were not directly related to the heavy rains.
Damage such as crop flooding and livestock deaths are also increasing. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, as of 6 p.m. on the 10th, crop flooding damage amounted to 9,522 ha, and farmland loss and burial amounted to 88.1 ha. In addition, livestock sheds were flooded and damaged to 21 ha, and livestock deaths amounted to 339,000. Considering future weather conditions such as rainy seasons and heat waves, there are concerns that food prices may rise sharply.
The crop that suffered the most damage was rice, with 7,456.3 ha of rice paddies being flooded. Soybeans were next with 468.2 ha, and peppers with 309.1 ha. The scale of damage by region was 7,008.6 ha in South Chungcheong Province, 1,318 ha in North Gyeongsang Province, and 1,008.2 ha in North Jeolla Province. Livestock deaths included 315,600 chickens and 2,200 ducks. Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Song Mei-ling said on the day, “We will quickly assess the damage and pay disaster recovery costs and disaster insurance.”
From the 12th to the 14th, the scorching heat is expected to continue, especially in the central region. The stationary front (rainy season front) is being pushed south of the Korean peninsula by the dry air from the north. However, some areas may see localized showers. The rainy season front is expected to move north again around the 15th and start to bring rain to the entire country starting from the southern region on Tuesday, the 16th.
