President Yoon Seok-yeol returned home on the 12th after completing his five-day, two-night schedule at the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit.
The presidential plane (Air Force One) carrying President Yoon and his wife Kim Kun-hee landed at Seoul Airport in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province at around 8:40 p.m. that day.
At the airport, the People Power Party’s Emergency Response Committee Chairperson Hwang Woo-yea and Floor Leader Choo Kyung-ho came to greet them, while the government’s Minister of the Interior and Safety Lee Sang-min, and the Office of the President’s Chief of Staff Chung Jin-seok, Policy Director Sung Tae-yoon, and Senior Secretary for Political Affairs Hong Chul-ho came to greet them.
President Yoon greeted each of the welcoming guests by shaking their hands, then got into a vehicle with First Lady Kim and left the airport.
In his second overseas trip this year, President Yoon made every effort to lead international cooperation in response to North Korea-Russia military cooperation and to reaffirm the ROK-U.S. alliance, which has been elevated to the highest level.
At the NATO summit, President Yoon emphasized to leaders of allied nations that Atlantic security and Indo-Pacific security are inseparable, as the war in Ukraine now threatens security on the Korean Peninsula.
He also urged NATO member states and partner countries IP4 (Korea, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand) to institutionalize cooperation and jointly respond to common threats.
In addition, President Yoon raised the level of cooperation among countries in the Indo-Pacific region by issuing a joint statement condemning the IP4 and North Korea and Russia.
There has also been continued production of tangible results related to the ‘Washington Declaration’ reached during the state visit to the United States in April last year.
President Yoon and US President Joe Biden held a summit meeting despite their busy schedules on the occasion of the NATO summit and adopted a joint signature approving the ‘ROK-US Korean Peninsula Nuclear Deterrence Nuclear Operations Guidelines.’
Before heading to Washington D.C., President Yoon visited Honolulu, Hawaii on the 8th and 9th and expressed his will to strengthen the Korea-U.S. alliance.
President Yoon visited the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, which oversees U.S. forces stationed in Korea, to hear about the operational status from Commander of the Indo-Pacific Command Samuel Paparo and encourage the soldiers serving in the Indo-Pacific Command.
