supporters of the political groups in the European Parliament announced today at a press conference how they will vote next week on the proposal for a second term of Ursula von der Leyen at the head of the European Commission.

The European People’s Party expressed strong support for von der Leyen – its leading candidate in the last MEP elections. According to the party spokesman, the necessary 361 votes can be secured from the ranks of the EPP, the Socialists and Democrats (SiD) and “Renew Europe”.

Sid expressed his readiness to support the proposal, but clarified that this is not a “blank check” and insisted on continuing the Green Deal, but “with a red heart”.

“Patriots for Europe” indicated that they would not support Von der Leyen.

The Group of European Conservatives and Reformists will vote by conscience, with some MEPs from this political force already saying they will be against it.

Renew Europe also expressed support for von der Leyen on the condition that the Green Deal is preserved.

According to the “Greens”, the condition for the continuation of environmental protection policies is key. So far, there is no final decision to support Von der Leyen, a spokesperson of the parliamentary group pointed out and expressed doubt that she will be re-elected only with the votes of the EPP, CD and liberals.

The “Left” has declared that it will not support Von der Leyen.

The “Europe of sovereign nations” group does not yet have a spokesperson, explained the press service of the EP, quoted by BTA.

As BTA reported, the EP will vote on Von der Leyen’s candidacy next Thursday. On Tuesday, the MEPs are expected to elect the President of the EP and appoint his 14 deputies and the five quaestors. The composition of the parliamentary committees will be approved on Wednesday. If the EP does not choose the next head of the EC next week, the European Council must make another proposal within a month.
