The German right-wing party Alternative for Germany (AfD) will create a faction in the European Parliament (EP) called “Europe of Sovereign Nations.” This was reported by the newspaper Die Welt, Day.Az reports with reference to TASS.

According to her, the new faction should include 28 parliamentarians from nine EU countries, half of the composition will be represented by AfD deputies. AfD member Rene Aust should become the head of “Europe of Sovereign Nations”. The faction will officially begin work on the evening of July 10, and negotiations are currently ongoing on the issue of distributing the positions of its deputy chairmen.

According to the publication, in addition to AfD, “Europe of Sovereign Nations” will also include groups of deputies from right-wing parties in other European countries, including the French “Reconquista” party of Eric Zemmour, the Polish coalition “Confederation of Freedom and Independence”, as well as the Bulgarian “Renaissance” and other movements. The publication notes that some of the parties joining the faction belong to the far-right.

In late May, ahead of the EP elections, all AfD representatives were expelled from the Identity and Democracy faction, following a series of scandals surrounding AfD politician Maximilian Krah. Since then, AfD has been looking for opportunities to form alternative alliances in the EP.

Thus, the new European Parliament will have at least two factions representing right-wing conservatives, far-right forces, and Eurosceptics. In addition to “Europe of Sovereign Nations”, this political wing includes the “Patriots of Europe” faction, recently created with the participation of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban. “Identity and Democracy”, created in 2019, has lost a significant number of members with the formation of new parliamentary associations and can no longer claim the status of a faction.
