The economic downturn has claimed its next victim. Druckhaus Kaufmann GmbH is insolvent.
The more than 200-year-old Druckhaus Kaufmann GmbH apparently filed for insolvency at the local court on July 9, 2024. This was reported by the “Stadtanzeiger Ortenau”. After filing for insolvency, 180 employees of the traditional printing company are now fearing for their jobs. The reasons for the insolvency were the aftermath of the corona pandemic and the general economic weakness. In particular, the high energy costs as well as the rising paper prices and the decline in print orders made the insolvency inevitable, the report says.
According to the newspaper, the Offenburg District Court has appointed lawyer Dr. Thorsten Schleich as the provisional insolvency administrator. Furthermore, the business operations of the Kaufmann printing house are to continue in full for the time being; the salaries of the 180 employees are also secured by the insolvency money.
The Kaufmann printing house was founded in 1816 and has therefore been in existence for more than 200 years. The company can look back on decades of successful history, but the entire printing industry is in decline due to increasing digitalization. Lower print volumes and difficult site conditions made insolvency a complete disaster. Since the beginning of the year, the printing house has tried to avoid bankruptcy by cutting costs and, since March, by introducing short-time work. An investor offer also failed at the beginning of this month due to poor economic prospects.
