The United States Soccer Federation announces it on a websites night to Thursday Norwegian time.
Gregg Berhalter’s firing comes after the national team crashed out of the Copa America group stage, following a 1-0 loss to Uruguay in Kansas City earlier in July.
“We are now focused on working with our sporting director Matt Crocker and leveraging his experience at the highest levels of the sport to ensure we find the right person to lead the national team into a new era of success on the pitch,” said the American Football President Cindy Parlow.
The Copa America was the United States’ last chance to face strong international competition in official games, before the 2026 World Cup.
– We are very disappointed, and we know that we are capable of delivering better. We were not able to show that. It’s that simple, Berhalter said after the match against Uruguay.
The now-fired coach also said he was sure he would be the manager of the USA national team when the World Cup starts in 2026, but that doesn’t seem to be the case now.
– Gregg has earned the respect of everyone in our organization and played a key role in bringing together a young team and the program for the future. We know he will be successful in his next coaching job, says Athletic Director Crocker.
Now the search for a new coach begins before the WC in 2026.
– We have already started the search process, says Crocker.
