The 2024 Copa América was the scene of an unfortunate event that took place immediately after the semi-final between Colombia and Uruguay on Wednesday night.
What was supposed to be a celebration turned into a battlefield as Uruguay players and Colombian fans engaged in an altercation in the stands at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte.
The scenes of euphoria suddenly turned to violence when some Uruguayan players, after the end of the match, confronted the Colombian fans in the stands.
Eyewitnesses described how what began with verbal exchanges quickly escalated into physical confrontations.
Among those involved were figures such as Ronald Araújo and Darwin Núñez, the latter receiving a blow from a fan.
It is suggested that the presence of Núñez’s family near the origin of the fight was the trigger for his direct involvement in the riots, closely followed by teammates.
In this regard, the captain of the Uruguayan national team, José María Giménez, expressed his version of the events to the press.
“They attacked our family, a certain sector of the people of Colombia. And they won’t let us speak on the microphone. I’m going to say it now, because if not, they’ll cut it off later. Our families were in danger, we had to go into the stands to take out our loved ones, with little babies, newborns.”.

It is important to note that the semi-final was won by Colombia, after a frenetic match whose pace was hectic from start to finish.
Now, the Colombian team will face Argentina in the grand final of the 2024 Copa América, to be played this Sunday in Miami.
