The German Economic Institute has calculated that anyone who puts organic products on their grill will have to shell out considerably more for them. One treat is particularly expensive.
Organic meat or vegan substitutes on the grill are significantly more expensive than steaks and sausages from conventional animal husbandry. This is the result of calculations by the German Economic Institute (IW) in Cologne, which the Funke media group reports on.
According to the report, an example grill basket for four people with meat and dairy products, grilled vegetables, salad, side dishes and sauces in the organic version costs around 80 percent more than the grill basket with conventionally produced food. Four people therefore have to pay a good 48 euros for the organic grill basket, but just under 27 euros for the conventional equivalent. The institute confirmed the figures when asked.
The organic meat primarily influences the overall price, especially for sausages (plus 5.32 euros) and organic beef steaks (plus 5.98 euros). But the costs for grilled side dishes, especially vegetables such as peppers (plus 2.28 euros), but also tomatoes (plus 2.03 euros) and lettuce (plus 1.37 euros) are also significantly higher in organic quality.
At an average of just under 33 euros, a vegan barbecue basket (not organic) is somewhat more expensive (plus 22 percent) than a conventional one containing meat due to the expensive substitute products, but significantly cheaper than one with only organic products.
According to the example calculation, per eater you pay about 6.70 euros for the conventional variant, 12 euros for organic barbecue products and around 8.20 euros for the vegan option.
