The Director of the Nutrition Department at the Sudanese Ministry of Health in South Darfur, Howayda Abdullah, announced the death of 4 children affected by malnutrition in the “Tuls” locality.

According to the “Sudan News” website, the official said, “Her administration has been facing a complete shortage of therapeutic milk and therapeutic food for malnourished children for a whole month.”

Abdullah revealed, “There are 8 children in the Wadhgam administrative unit affiliated with Al-Radom locality who are suffering from severe malnutrition accompanied by medical complications. They were transferred to the treatment center in Nyala. She held the United Nations organizations working in the field of nutrition responsible for the death of any child from malnutrition in South Darfur, due to the negligence of the World Health Organization, UNICEF, and the World Food Program.”

The Director of the Nutrition Department condemned “UNICEF’s sending of supplies to Nyala without providing a budget to transport treatment to the localities, at a time when the Ministry of Health does not have the minimum capabilities to intervene due to the loss of all means of movement due to the war.”

In a related context, the General Coordination for Displaced Persons said that “the number of malnourished children in the Kalma camp for displaced persons has reached about 6 children, and the situation in the camp is worsening due to the lack of food.”

For her part, Howayda Abdullah explained, “The Kalma camp has three nutrition centers run by the Elite organization in coordination with the Ministry of Health represented by the Nutrition Department,” stressing that “her administration will conduct a comprehensive survey by measuring children with the MOAC targeting the Atash camp for displaced persons in Nyala North, starting next Monday.”

The war broke out in Sudan on April 15, 2023, between the army led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the Rapid Support Forces led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemedti). In late June, the Global Food Security Index warned that “14 regions in Sudan are facing the risk of famine.” The index said in a report that “Sudan is facing the worst levels of acute food insecurity ever,” adding that there is a rapid deterioration in the food situation in Sudan.

The report revealed that “about 755,000 people in Sudan are facing one of the worst levels of hunger, while 8.5 million people, or about 18% of the population, suffer from food shortages that may result in severe malnutrition or require emergency coping strategies.”
