Saharan dust in Guatemala: cloud could remain in the country for 8 days in July 2024

He National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology ―INSIVUMEH― has shared an update on the presence of the Sahara dust in Guatemala during July 2024This phenomenon is normal at this time of year, however, it is important to be informed in order to determine the measures to implement during the highest concentrations, especially if you have respiratory problems.

The institution’s report indicates that the dust cloud entered the country on July 11 and will present higher concentrations on Saturday, July 13 in the south of the country. The mass will affect the national territory at a minimal level, however, it will be present until Thursday, July 18, according to satellite projections. Insivumeh will be monitoring the phenomenon to report any changes.

This event, although natural and recurrent, can have important implications for health and the environment. Particularly people with respiratory problems, older adults and children should take the necessary precautions.

What is Sahara dust and how does it affect health?

Saharan dust is a mixture of very fine sand and mineral particles that rise from the Sahara Desert in Africa and are carried by winds across the Atlantic to the Americas and other parts of the world. This dust is rich in nutrients such as phosphorus and iron, making it a natural fertilizer for the Amazon rainforest and other ecosystems. However, it can also affect air quality and cause respiratory problems. In addition, it can influence the climate by reflecting solar radiation and affecting the formation of hurricanes.

The National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction – CONRED has indicated that prolonged exposure can be harmful to people, animals and also plants. Complications that could occur to human health include:

  • Increased complications in cases of asthma.
  • Increase in acute respiratory infections.
  • Pneumonia.
  • Eye infections and injuries.

In light of the arrival of the cloud, we share the following recommendations with you:

  • Perform indoor activities: It is preferable to stay indoors during the days when the phenomenon is present in the country to reduce exposure to dust.
  • Use protective glasses: To protect the eyes from particles and prevent irritation, the use of protective glasses is recommended.
  • Wear a mask: Masks can help filter fine particles from the air and protect the respiratory system.
  • Moisturize your skin: Applying moisturizing creams can help prevent dryness and irritation of the skin caused by exposure to the mass.
  • Consult a doctor: If you experience respiratory symptoms or eye irritation, it is important to seek medical attention.
