Dehradun: July 12 was a very special day for Uttarakhand. The entire report of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) has been made public by the government. Former Chief Secretary Shatrughan Singh held a press conference regarding the Uniform Civil Code at the State Guest House Annexe in Dehradun. He said that the entire report of the Uniform Civil Code has been made public on Friday. The entire report of the UCC will be available to the general public from the evening. The general public can now read this report. The government has decided to make the report available in the public domain. CM Pushkar Singh Dhami said that this law will be implemented in the state from October.

Earlier, the Uttarakhand government had released only the main parts of the report, but on Friday evening the full report became available to the general public. Anyone can see the report by visiting the website. Couples living in ‘live in relationship’ will have to register. The purpose of registration is to provide protection, no one’s privacy will be violated. The system of registration should also be kept in the rule. The age between 18 to 21 years is not mature and protection is needed.

UCC draft was prepared on 27 May 2022

In fact, the Dhami government of Uttarakhand had constituted a five-member committee to prepare the draft of UCC on 27 May 2022. The committee was constituted under the chairmanship of retired Justice Ranjana Desai. The committee took suggestions for UCC from 2.33 lakh people through 43 public dialogue programs and various mediums. After this, on February 2, 2024, the committee submitted the UCC report to the government.

Passed by the Assembly on 7 February

After the report was submitted by the committee, Chief Minister Dhami tabled the draft of UCC in the Assembly on 7 February. It was passed by voice vote in the Assembly. After this, Uttarakhand became the first state in the country to implement UCC. The bill was sent to the President to make it a law and then on March 11, President Draupadi Murmu approved the UCC Bill. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has announced to implement it in Uttarakhand in the month of October.
