According to the data provided by the company on this occasion, the new cavity, which mobilized an investment of 400 million dirhams (MDH), brings the total storage capacity of SOMAS to 310,000 tons, an increase of more than 55%. This strategic expansion meets the growing market demand and increases the national autonomy in butane gas to more than 40 days.
“This achievement testifies to the efforts made by SOMAS for the development of the national energy sector,” stressed Ms. Benali, in a speech on this occasion, seeing it as an achievement that fits perfectly with the government policy aimed at strengthening the storage capacities of energy products, in accordance with the High Guidelines of His Majesty King Mohammed VI.
“Butane gas is one of the most consumed energy products in Morocco, recording an annual growth of more than 3% on average. Its consumption reached 3.2 million tonnes of oil equivalent in 2023, representing 26% of our national consumption of petroleum products,” said Ms. Benali.
He added: “These figures highlight the relevance of this new storage capacity, reinforcing the strategic role of SOMAS as a key player in the development of energy storage infrastructure, thus contributing to the energy security of the Kingdom.”
“SOMAS is honored to inaugurate its fourth butane gas storage cavity, demonstrating its shareholders’ commitment to Morocco’s energy future,” said SOMAS Board Chairman Tawfiq Hamoumi.
“As part of its strategy to support the national energy transition, SOMAS aims to further develop underground storage capacities, thus strengthening the security and reliability of Morocco’s energy supply,” he added, in a speech delivered on this occasion.
“This significant expansion strengthens our ability to ensure a stable and secure supply of butane gas, while supporting the national energy transition, with sustainable and innovative solutions,” noted, for his part, the company’s general manager, Khalid Baghri.
At the same time, he continued, this project contributes to the economic and social development of the city of Mohammedia, and more particularly, the commune of Sidi Moussa Ben Ali, with the creation of nearly 50 direct and indirect jobs, as well as significant improvements to local infrastructure.”
Founded in 1974, SOMAS has specialized in the advanced technique of storage in underground saline cavities, located 500 meters deep in salt deposits. These facilities allow for massive storage of LPG, in accordance with strict international standards in terms of safety and environment.
