Thanks to the reform of the electricity market in Israel, electricity prices will decrease by 7-10%.
Energy Minister Eli Cohen (Likud) said this in an interview with Ynet. He confirmed that the reform will begin on July 25.
From this day on, all consumers, even those who do not have a smart meter, will be able to freely choose their energy supplier and use flexible tariffs.
Let us recall that Energy Minister Eli Cohen, at a conference of the state-owned Noga company, stated that on July 25, 2024, Israelis will be able to change their electricity supplier and save hundreds of shekels a year without having to install a smart meter.
Israeli consumers are reluctant to use alternative electricity suppliers, even though this option has been available for two years. The reason is the need to install a smart meter, which costs NIS 270. In connection with this, on February 1, the Ministry of Energy, the Electricity Authority and Noga decided to oblige all suppliers to use regular analog meters for calculating payments.
Following the hearings held at the Electricity Authority on March 21, a set of measures was developed to simplify the procedure for changing suppliers as much as possible, including retroactive settlement with the Hevrat Hahashmal company based on one meter reading.
There are currently about 480,000 smart meters installed in private households in Israel. The complete replacement of analog meters with digital ones is planned to be completed by 2028. The installation of new meters will continue at an accelerated pace, and a fee will be charged for unscheduled installation, as before.
Currently, 40 companies have been granted licenses to supply electricity. Some of them offer customers flexible tariff plans (see below for details), which allow them to reduce their bills by 10-20%. The annual turnover of the electricity market is NIS 35 billion.
