The spokeswoman of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, stated that the normalization of relations between Turkey and Syria is of vital importance for achieving a comprehensive solution in Syria and for increasing regional security, Turkish private television station NTV reported.
“Therefore, we encourage our partners to maintain contacts in all possible ways,” Zakharova also stated at a press conference in Moscow.
According to the spokeswoman, Turkey has recently taken important steps regarding this process.
“Recently there have been signals from Turkey, including from Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, that Turkey is ready for this (normalization of relations with Syria). We welcome this trend and believe that practical steps will be taken by both sides in this direction.” she said.
Zakharova emphasized that the normalization of relations between Turkey and Syria is of vital importance for achieving a comprehensive solution in Syria and for increasing regional security. “That’s why we encourage our partners to keep in touch in all possible ways,” she added.
Noting that the Astana format is the only effective international mechanism for developing a peaceful solution in Syria, Zakharova said: “We are determined to continue our close cooperation with our Turkish partners in the Astana format,” BTA reports.
“We see potential to play a constructive role in mediation efforts in other countries seeking peace and stability in the region, including within the framework of the Astana format (process of normalizing relations between Turkey and Syria),” Zakharova said.
