Rome,

Russia has deployed about 10 million troops along its border with Ukraine in protest of former Soviet Union Ukraine joining NATO.

The United States and European countries have repeatedly warned that Russia could infiltrate Ukraine at any time. Russia’s series of actions continue to escalate tensions.

In this context, Pope Francis spoke in a sad voice at a public meeting at the Vatican’s Church in Rome today, saying that the war situation in Ukraine was deeply painful and condemned any act that violated international law.

He also called on politicians to examine their conscience before God and to observe Ash Wednesday, March 2, as the International Day for Peaceful Fasting and Prayer.

Pope Francis’ remarks today come two days after Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered peacekeepers to move to Ukraine.
