Artificial intelligence systems like ChatGPT often surprise with sophisticated and creative expressions. But do AI speech robots still evolve as much as humans?

Artificial intelligence (AI) can enhance the creativity of individual stories, but it leads to very different content when used multiple times. This is the central result of a scientific study published in the journal “Scientific Advances”. It shows that AI can generate good story ideas for stories that audiences find novel and interesting. However, according to the study, AI-supported stories have more similarities and are smaller than works written without AI support.

The research was conducted at the University of Exeter Business School, the Institute for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence in Exeter and the UCL School of Management in London. In the first phase, the researchers divided 300 test subjects into three groups: The first group wrote without the help of AI, the second used ChatGPT with the new language model 4.o for initial advice, and the third group chose up to five AI generated. device. It is about short stories for young adults.

AI help for bores

In the second phase of the survey, 600 people rated the quality of the stories based on novelty or creativity and interest. The results showed that writers with access to AI achieved 8.1 percent higher creativity and 9 percent higher interest than the control group without using AI. Authors who rate themselves as less creative benefit significantly from AI support: their stories are then rated by the audience as being 26.6 percent more well-written and 15.2 percent less boring.

The words from the ChatGPT chat robot are therefore able to help creative writers a little. But ChatGPT’s creativity was quickly disrupted because computer-generated stories are more similar to each other than words created by humans alone. The researchers found that the similarity between the stories of the authors who used AI increased by 10.7 percent.

Is nature a downward spiral?

Professor Oliver Hauser from the University of Exeter’s Business School explained: “Our results show how artificial AI can increase creativity, but also that it can reduce overall innovation.” Hauser said of the “downstream” that could lead to a social dilemma. more in the future.” However, this may also reduce the overall novelty of the stories.

“Our results suggest that despite the positive impact artificial AI has had on individual creativity, caution may be warranted when using artificial AI on a large scale for creative tasks.”

Anil Doshi from UCL’s School of Management added: “As the publishing industry embraces more original, AI-driven stories, they can become more unique and generic.”
