Spain: The championship could restart on June 11 with the Seville derby
Madrid – Javier Tebas, president of LaLiga, the body that governs professional football in Spain, indicated on Sunday evening that the Spanish championship, suspended since mid-March due to the new coronavirus, could resume on June 11.
“The first match of the Liga could take place on Thursday night, June 11,” Tebas said in statements to the Movistar Plus channel.
“We would like it to be the Seville derby, Betis-Seville,” he added, noting that this match, which is widely followed in Spain, would be “a tribute to this return of La Liga and to what happened.”
However, the LaLiga boss noted that the official date would be announced “early next week”, as would the rest of the schedule for the first four of the eleven remaining games.
The President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sanchez, announced on Saturday that the Spanish football championship will restart the week of June 8.
“I would like to inform you that with the Higher Council of Sport, we have agreed to resume La Liga the week of June 8,” said the head of the Spanish executive during a press conference.
