BOLZANO. The autopsy will be performed today, Saturday 13 July, on the body of Carlo Lattanzio, the 42 year old worker from Puglia who died during the night of Monday in front of the Sports hotel from Colle Isarco, where he had been staying for just over a week.
The man, probably under the influence of drugs and alcohol, had attacked the police, who were forced to use a taser to stop him.
Once he was immobilized, the paramedics intervened to proceed with treatment, but the worker – who worked for a construction company Sterzing – felt ill and suffered a fatal cardiac arrest.
A choice, that of using electric pulse guns, that has been dividing politics and public opinion in the last few hours.
“We will not go into the merits of the reasons why it was decided to equip us with the taser. It was assigned to us and we have trained our soldiers to use it”, he underlines Piermarco Borettazcommander of the operational department of the Bolzano Carabinieri, “So even in this case we followed all the procedures correctly”.
The autopsy will clarify the causes of death: the outcome will be decisive in the investigation opened by the Prosecutor’s Office against unknown persons.
The witness
The dynamics of that night were confirmed by anyone – police, hotel manager, paramedics and carabinieri – who was on site in the 120 minutes in which the tragedy unfolded: the arrival of the carabinieri in front of Lattanzio’s room (2 am), the man who threw himself from the window, the attack on the soldiers, the taser and the illness.
The 42-year-old from Barletta died around 3 am, after prolonged and futile attempts to revive him. “I can confirm that we found ourselves in front of a dangerous and violent person,” he testifies. Markus Mayrcommander of the Colle Isarco volunteer firefighters, “The man was attacking us, he was out of control, when he was tasered by a young carabiniere. He did the right thing, but he was in shock after discovering that he was dead”.
The common
Yesterday Martin Albermayor of Brennero (which includes the hamlet of Colle Isarco), had a meeting with the commander of the Carabinieri Palomathe dynamics of the tragedy were discussed, but not only that. “We are evaluating the possibility of deepening the controls and analyzing every access to our facilities,” explains Alber, “We must make sure that the seasonal workers who come are not potentially dangerous people. A sort of selection is already being done, but probably greater collaboration with the companies can help us increase safety.”
On the case of Carlo Lattanzio, the mayor of Brennero expressed “full solidarity with the carabinieri who acted that night” and has no doubts “about the goodness of their way of acting”.
The taser
Police Commissioner Sartori defines it as a “useful and safe tool to avoid firearms”. Ten tasers are supplied to the police headquarters, another eight are used by other provincial police stations. There are approximately 60 police officers authorized to use the stun gun in Alto Adige. In the last 24 months, the taser has been used only twice: in Bressanone in 2023 and in the capital in 2022.
