“Khoury” meets the Egyptian Foreign Minister

In Cairo, the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Political Affairs and Acting Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Stephanie Khoury, held constructive talks with the Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Badr Abdelati, and other Egyptian officials concerned with the Libyan file.

The Deputy Special Representative said that her meetings with Egyptian officials discussed “ways to revitalize the political process in Libya with the aim of ending the current stalemate and putting the country on the path to general elections.”

Khoury added: “Her talks reflected a consensus on the need to preserve Libya’s unity and sovereignty, and the importance of coordinating international initiatives aimed at supporting Libyans in overcoming the current crisis and achieving sustainable peace and stability in Libya.”

For his part, the official spokesman for the Egyptian Foreign Ministry, Ahmed Abu Zeid, stated that “Minister Abdel Aati expressed the Egyptian side’s aspiration to enhance cooperation with the Chargé d’Affaires of the United Nations Mission in Libya in a way that contributes to the success of its mission in a manner that serves efforts to reach a solution to the crisis in Libya with Libyan ownership and leadership.”

The minister pointed out, “Egypt’s continued efforts to help the Libyan parties reach an agreement and strengthen the Libyan-Libyan solution path, and respect state institutions, with the aim of reaching the simultaneous holding of presidential and parliamentary elections,” stressing “the necessity of the exit of all foreign forces, foreign fighters and mercenaries from Libya within a specific time frame and in a manner that preserves the unity, safety and stability of Libya.”
