Apple’s Vision Pro computer glasses are now available to buy in Germany. What is the device, which costs around 4,000 euros, good for? The best features.

At just under 4,000 euros, Apple’s new computer glasses are certainly not a bargain. Competing devices from Facebook’s Meta or HTC, for example, cost significantly less. However, Apple promises users added value, such as the ability to work with other devices from the company – and sophisticated technology.

In this article we explain what the new device can do, how to use it – and where you can test it for free.

The Vision Pro initially has displays in front of the eyes – like VR glasses for displaying virtual reality. The real environment is recorded by cameras and transmitted to these screens. However, users can look forward to other areas of application:

Apple’s computer glasses can detect movements and the position of arms, hands and fingers and can be controlled by looking or using simple gestures: a mouse click, for example, is equivalent to pressing your thumb and index finger together. To fix what you want to click on, all you need to do is look at the spot.

Each ear is also equipped with a speaker that can deliver 3D audio. The audio playback is aligned precisely and immediately to the position of the source. Finally, the Vision Pro recognizes its user by their eyes. This biometric identification (“Optic-ID”) is based on iris patterns and is a lot more accurate than facial recognition (“Face-ID”) on the iPhone.

The Vision Pro has an aluminum frame and a display domain that overlays the wearer’s eye. The battery is mounted externally in a so-called power pack to reduce the weight on the head and improve wearing comfort. A facial scan is used to select the appropriate light seal to protect the field of vision from external light.

Tip: If you want to test the comfort and features, you can do so in one of the 16 stores across Germany. Individual demo appointments can be booked via the online store.

It is unclear how many Vision Pro devices Apple has sold since the US market launch in early February. According to information from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple expects to sell 400,000 to 450,000 headsets this year. Apple itself has high hopes for the Vision Pro. It will be a moment that people will remember, said Apple CEO Tim Cook in an interview with RTL/ntv and Stern before the sales launch in Germany.
