Dakar, July 14 (APS) – The head of state in Senegal, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, expressed his determination to mediate with humility in the dispute between ECOWAS and the three countries that formed the Federation of Sahel States Alliance with recently.

Mediator named by his ECOWAS colleagues in the crisis between the sub-regional organization in Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger, President Faye declared on Saturday afternoon in Dakar that he intended to carry out his mission with “humility” but “without illusion”‘.

”I have no illusions, I’m going there with a lot of humility,” he said.

Bassirou Diomaye Faye will be with his colleagues, including Togolese President Faure who has promised to do what he believes he must do”, namely ”talk, discuss, work to resolve positions”.

According to him, “whatever decision the AES makes, it is a decision that we will respect because they are sovereign states”.

“I am lucky or unlucky that I was not there when ECOWAS adopted the sanctions against AES States. These States do not (not) see me among those who approved them. So they have this ability to talk to me more than they can to other people. It is an asset that must be put to the service of the community,” he argued.

“ECOWAS is facing difficulties. We see it. We cannot say that an organization based on the objectives of political and economic integration is strengthened when there are States that want to leave it,” he said.

He clarified that he was not waiting to be appointed as an Intercessor to talk to the heads of state of these countries.

The president of Senegal has already visited Mali and Burkina Faso.

“I respect their sovereignty, but I tried to attract the attention of my colleagues from these countries that are going through a situation that we know and that we are very supportive of to try to bring them back to the negotiating board.” emphasis.

He argued that ECOWAS countries and AES countries have many challenges in common, such as the fight against terrorism and the trafficking of people and illegal substances.
