“Bamako Dreams 30”, which presents both a retrospective and prospective look at the Bamako Meetings (African Photography Biennale), highlights the artistic diversity in African photography, notably through the technical skill of the photographers and the variety of thematic and aesthetic horizons that inspire them.
This abundant exhibition brings together 24 artists from the four corners of Africa who, through their unique vision of the continent, offer a diverse and stimulating panorama of contemporary creativity, while giving birth to a rich and varied palette of artistic expressions, where the camera becomes an instrument of reinvention.
Speaking on this occasion, the president of the National Foundation of Museums of Morocco (FNM), Mehdi Qotbi, highlighted the important place given by His Majesty King Mohammed VI to culture in Morocco, stressing the continuous efforts made by the Sovereign in favor of the cultural influence of Africa.
“We are rooted in our African continent,” said Mr. Qotbi, recalling, in this sense, the various exhibitions and major events organized by the FNM in Morocco, which highlight Africa, its cultural heritage, as well as its artistic diversity and wealth.
For his part, the Malian Minister of Crafts, Culture, Hotel Industry and Tourism, Andogoly Guindo, indicated that the exhibition “Bamako Dreams 30” brings together magnificent works that demonstrate all the creativity, know-how and genius of the various participating African creators.
Mr. Guindo thus wished to salute and encourage the artists who took part in this beautiful exhibition in order to continue to highlight African creativity and participate in the international influence of African art.
Regarding the African Photography Biennale, which is celebrating its thirtieth anniversary this year, the Malian minister noted that it constitutes a platform for the exchange of experiences but also a space for the blossoming of talents and the promotion of African creativity in the field of photography.
For his part, the exhibition curator and general curator of the Bamako Meetings, Lassana Igo Diarra, specified that this exhibition, which notably honors the different photographers who participated in previous editions of the Biennale, represents an artistic collaboration between various countries of the continent.
“The city of Rabat is a very good platform to give great visibility to the African creative world,” he stressed, noting that this exhibition is structured around five complementary themes, namely “From the prism of the other to the image of oneself”, “Counter-narratives”, “Humanist perspectives”, “Reinvented spaces” and “Ecological meditations”.
The exhibition “Bamako Dreams 30”, which will be open to the general public from May 8, is co-produced by the National Museum Foundation and the “Rencontres de Bamako” (African Photography Biennale). It pays tribute to the Malian capital, the birthplace of legendary talents such as Seydou Keita and Malick Sidibé.
Through this exhibition, the National Museum of Photography invites visitors to immerse themselves in the captivating world of these artists, who traveled through cities, explored villages and absorbed the essence of their native lands, before transforming their experiences into unique visual stories, thus inscribing their voices in the dream of a united continent proud of its diversity.
