Due to rains, crocodiles invade urban areas of Tamaulipas

Given the presence of intense rainfall recorded in recent days in the southern area of Tamaulipas, Hundreds of crocodiles have come out onto the streets of Tampico, Madero City y Altamira, sighted at different points, generating concern among citizens and authorities.

Authorities have reported the capture of more than 160 copies over the course of a week, for this reason the Secretariat of Urban Development and Environment (Seduma) has implemented monitoring and census of the species to have greater control.

Karina Lizeth Saldivar Lartiguehead of Seduma, pointed out the importance of working together with the rest of the state authorities to provide attention and find alternatives for the issue, as he claims it has generated unrest among residents of the metropolitan area.

Information shared by the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) declares that the recent rains in the entity together with the rise in the water level in the lagoons caused the increase in crocodile sightings.

He mentions that during the first week of July, at least 135 specimens were captured in the municipalities of Madero City y Tampico, as well as 30 more in Altamira, indicating that these animals were placed in safe areas.

On the other hand, Saldivar Lartigue, denotes the need to achieve a population control of crocodiles, committing to their care and respect for their conservation, but also guaranteeing people’s safetysince some of the reptiles even appeared inside some homes.

He also mentioned that the appearance of the species is facilitated by the fact that many lagoons are connected with drainage systems, allowing them to leave in search of food or simply move from their habitat.
