Heavy rains have wreaked havoc in Germany, with flooding reported in a number of areas, DPA and BTA report.

A severe thunderstorm in the southern German state of Bavaria has flooded roads and downed trees on the ground, disrupting traffic in places.

According to a police spokesman in the town of Kempten, southwest of Munich, roads were white with hail and emergency services reported around 320 operations between 6pm and midnight.

The situation is worst in the Allgäu region and the city of Lindau, near Lake Constance and the border with Austria. Follow-up operations, including draining the basements, continued into the night.

Another 230 calls were registered by the police station in the town of Rosenheim, further east. Emergency services responded to reports of flooded basements and trees down on roads and tracks. No injuries were reported.

Meanwhile, heavy rains in parts of the northern state of Lower Saxony also flooded basements and streets.

Emergency services in Bentheim, near the border with the Netherlands, were particularly busy yesterday after receiving more than 100 reports of incidents related to the heavy rain.

Flooding led to the temporary closure of a hospital emergency room, while overflowing dams caused further damage in some residential areas. Several roads were temporarily closed, with around 200 firefighters called to the scene to help deal with the situation.

Further south, strong winds caused €130,000 worth of damage to several residential buildings, including an old people’s home, in the town of Diessen, which is in a wooded area near the town of Osnabrück.

The German weather service warned that more storms and heavy rain are expected in Lower Saxony today and tomorrow, especially in coastal areas.
