More than two-thirds of Americans (67%) and 54% of Democratic voters believe that US President Joe Biden must withdraw from the electoral race and not opt for re-election in the November elections that would pit him against Republican Donald Trump, according to a poll published on Thursday.
He ABC News/The Washington Post poll notes that only 30% of voters believe Biden should remain in the campaign at 81 years old and after the presidential debate on June 27, which again raised doubts about his mental agility and ability to serve a second four-year term.
Only 42% of Democratic voters believe Biden should remain in the racewhile more than 70% of independent voters, needed to win the White House, believe Biden should drop out and make way for Vice President Kamala Harris to lead the ticket.
The poll shows that voting intentions nationwide remain tied at 46% for both Joe Biden and Donald Trump, while in a hypothetical matchup between Harris and Trump, the current vice president would obtain 49% of the votes compared to Trump’s 47%.
The survey was conducted July 5-9 among more than 2,400 American adults with a margin of error of 2%.
