President Yoon Seok-yeol’s positive evaluation of his state affairs has not been able to break out of the 30% range for 14 weeks (based on Realmeter). In terms of party approval ratings, the People Power Party has overtaken the Democratic Party of Korea.
According to a poll conducted by polling firm Realmeter from the 8th to the 12th on 2,502 eligible voters aged 18 or older nationwide for the second week of July, commissioned by the Energy Economy Newspaper, President Yoon’s approval rating rose 1.2 percentage points from the previous week to 32.3%.
The negative evaluation was 63.8%, down 1.5%p from last week. The difference between positive and negative evaluations was 31.5%p, outside the margin of error. President Yoon’s approval rating has remained stagnant in the low 30% range for three months.
President Yoon’s daily approval rating closed at 31.1% on the 5th, and recorded 31.3% on the 9th. His approval rating then rose to 33.6% on the 10th, 34.3% on the 11th, and 31.9% on the 12th.
A Realmeter official explained, “In terms of daily approval ratings, this is the most dynamic since the 22nd general election,” and “It seems that the range of approval rating fluctuations widened during the NATO tour.”
However, in terms of domestic issues, he predicted, “The situation is getting more intense with the president’s approval of the request for reconsideration of the special prosecutor’s law related to the death of Private First Class Cha Hae-byeong (veto), the opposition party’s Legislative and Judiciary Committee’s pressure to investigate the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the risk to the first lady, and discussions of a presidential hearing and permanent special prosecutor’s office,” adding, “We need to watch how the approval rating will turn out amid the impeachment offensive.”
In a poll of 1,001 voters aged 18 and older nationwide conducted on the 11th and 12th, the approval ratings for the People Power Party and the Democratic Party of Korea crossed.
The People Power Party rose 2 percentage points from the previous week to 38%, while the Democratic Party fell 3.2 percentage points from last week to 35%. The gap between the two parties is 3 percentage points, and they are locked in a close race within the margin of error for the 9th consecutive week.
The Fatherland Innovation Party then recorded 10.3%, down 0.6%p from the previous week, the New Reform Party recorded 4.3%, up 0.5%p, the New Future Party recorded 1.5%, down 0.3%p, and the Progressive Party recorded 1.8%, up 0.6%p. The non-partisan group recorded 7.9%, up 1.3%p from the previous week.
A Realmeter official explained, “The People Power Party is nearing the 40% mark as its support base is consolidating ahead of the party convention,” adding, “With former leader Lee Jae-myung’s ‘eating-lifeism’ and Rep. Kim Du-kwan’s ‘one-upmanship,’ the party has continued its aggressive offensive against the ruling party as the competition for the party leadership heats up, but has fallen slightly compared to the previous week.”
This opinion poll was conducted using the wireless (97%) and landline (3%) automated response telephone (ARS) survey method. The response rates for the presidential administration performance evaluation survey and the party approval survey were 2.9% and 2.8%, respectively, and the sampling error was ±2.0%p and ±3.1%p, respectively, at a 95% confidence level.
