The assassination attempt on Donald Trump at a Pennsylvania rally was the Secret Service’s biggest security crisis in decades, raising questions about how it could have happened. The agency faces multiple investigations.

Rep. James Comer, R-S.C., chairman of the House Oversight Committee, announced hours after the attack that his committee would begin an investigation. Comer called Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle to appear on July 22 to testify.
Experts, including Charles Marino, a former Secret Service supervisory agent for President Biden during his vice presidency, believe the FBI investigation will focus on failures in security planning for the rally. A key question will be how the shooter was able to position himself on a rooftop outside the event’s security perimeter without being detected.
The Secret Service said there were four sniper teams on the scene at the time of the shooting – two from the Secret Service and two from local law enforcement.
Matthew Crooks, 20, of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, climbed onto the roof of an industrial building 120 to 150 yards from the rally with a Colt AR-15 assault rifle and fired several shots from there. Seconds after the shooting began, Secret Service snipers began shooting at a suspect they spotted on the roof.
Police say Crooks used a firearm purchased by his father and explosive devices were found in his car. Authorities are trying to determine the attacker’s motive.
CNN reports that one witness told police moments before the shooting that an armed man was moving from rooftop to rooftop. Witnesses also told reporters that they saw a man with a rifle outside the rally’s security cordon before the shooting.
The Secret Service faces a major investigation to determine the causes of the security failures and propose measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
