New Delhi : Four nominated members of the BJP retired on Saturday, taking the party’s strength in the Upper House to 86 and that of the NDA to 101. The current strength of the Rajya Sabha is 226. Currently, 19 seats are vacant. Though the NDA can get key bills passed in the House during the upcoming budget session with the support of seven non-aligned nominated members, two independents and allies like the AIADMK and YSRCP, filling up the vacancies under the nominated category at the earliest will be crucial to reduce the alliance’s dependence on others.

The term of these members has been completed

Rakesh Sinha, Ram Shakal, Sonal Mansingh and Mahesh Jethmalani are the four nominated members who retired on Saturday. They had formally joined the BJP after being nominated to the Rajya Sabha. Another member in the nominated category is Ghulam Ali who is part of the BJP. He will retire in September 2028. The President nominates 12 members to the Rajya Sabha on the recommendation of the government. In the current House, seven of them have identified themselves as non-aligned (not part of the BJP), but such members always favour the ruling party in passing any law or resolution.

Congress, entangled in Rajya Sabha, played a game, loss of two seats was certain, yet the leader of opposition’s chair was saved for Kharge

19 seats are vacant in Rajya Sabha

Currently, there are 19 vacancies in the Upper House. These include four each from Jammu and Kashmir and the nominated category, and 11 from eight different states (two each from Assam, Bihar and Maharashtra, and one each from Haryana, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Tripura). Of these 11 seats, 10 fell vacant due to the election of members of the Lok Sabha last month, while one fell vacant due to the resignation of Bharat Rashtra Samiti member K. Keshava Rao. Rao later joined the Congress.

How many seats will BJP get in the elections?

Elections to these 11 seats in the coming months are likely to give the NDA eight seats and the India Bloc three seats, including one seat from Telangana to the Congress. This will take the party’s tally to 27 – two more than the number needed to retain the post of Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha. At present, the India Bloc has 87 members. The number of non-NDA and non-India opposition parties is 29.
