Guided by the Minimum Admission Bases (MBA) per School or Department of Higher Education, candidates for Higher Education complete their computerized form.

Each candidate, during the process of completing the computerized application, can only choose departments for which he has secured the minimum admission basis, depending on his score in the nationwide exams.

After the announcement of the grades in the special courses, the deadline for submitting computerized reports for admission to HEIs begins today. It will end at midnight on Thursday 7/18.

Pitfalls for candidates

Many characterize the process as the fifth course of the Panhellenic Examinations. Hard to believe for the candidates, who for almost three years throw their weight only on the preparation for the four exam subjects they have chosen. Perhaps now that the deadline for submitting their computerized report begins, they will agree with the characterization. And this is because the pitfalls are many, especially for those who do not have a few choices of schools, but are lost in the translation of the 420 departments and schools of the computer bulletin.

“Each year various mistakes are made by the candidates, mainly strategic mistakes”, observes the mathematician-analyst Mr. Stratos Stratigakis, with whose assistance “K” presents the points that the candidates – and their parents – must pay attention to . Specifically:

• Some declare as many departments as they can, for fear of being left out of the university. The mistake is that they also declare sections they don’t like in this way, with the result that there is a risk of succeeding in one they don’t want and, ultimately, abandoning it. The right thing is to declare a few sections so that they have control over the order of preference, but from the whole range of bases; high, medium and low, to ensure admission.

• Many applicants think that a high base means a good school, as opposed to schools with a lower base. However, the basis of a school does not express its value. The basis only expresses the demand for studies at this school. The demand is determined by the scientific subject, the seat of the department and its reputation.

• Caution: Many candidates believe that if they declare a department in a higher order of preference, they will be ahead of claiming a seat in that department over another candidate who declared the department in a lower order of preference. This tactic is wrong, as the order of preference does not matter. The candidate who has more points will be admitted to the department and not the one who declared it in a higher order. The only exception is the private schools, where only in the case of a tie, the one who has declared the school in a higher position takes precedence. In the other schools, in case of a tie, the grade in the course with the highest weighting factor counts.

• There are many study opportunities for candidates who passed the EBE threshold but did not accumulate many points. There are departments in regional universities with a valuable curriculum that do not attract many preferences because they are far from major urban centers. Indicatively, there are 92 departments in all scientific fields, the base of which is below 10,000 points in the last five years. The reasons are many and varied. Some of them are located on the edge of Greece and candidates do not prefer them, due to the distance. Some others have titles that confuse candidates and pass them by without bothering to look at the curriculum. These 92 departments (e.g. computer science, economics, history, psychology, materials science and engineering) may be a good study opportunity for candidates who did not do so well in the Pan-Hellenic.
