Interior Minister Rihards Kozlovskis (JV) told the LETA agency that living in the conditions of a hybrid war requires professional and patriotic leadership of services that ensure national security.

Mežviets manages the service professionally and convincingly, therefore a decision has been made to forward him for confirmation in the position for the next term.

The law stipulates that the head of the VDD is appointed by the Cabinet of Ministers for a five-year term at the suggestion of the minister of the relevant sector.

Mežviets became the head of VDD (at that time Security Police) in November 2014.

The LETA archive shows that in the Latvian special services, the bosses are in their positions for a relatively long time. Mežvieta’s predecessor, Jānis Reiniks, was in the position from 1999 to 2014.

The head of the Military Intelligence and Security Service (MIDD), Indulis Krēkis, has been in his position since the beginning of 2003. Last December, the government decided to extend his stay in this position for five years.

Jānis Kažociņš headed the Office for the Protection of the Constitution from 2003 to 2013. His successor, Jānis Maizītis, was in office from 2013 to 2021. In 2018, the Saeima approved him for another term of office, but he did not expect it because he died.

Born in 1973, Mežviets worked at the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Education and Science and the State Chancellery at the beginning of 2000.

He studied at the University of Latvia, where he obtained a master’s degree in social sciences in political science and a master’s degree in humanities in history.

Mežviets has been associated with national security issues since 2002, while VDD started its service in 2005. At the beginning of his service, Mežviets worked with anti-terrorism issues, making a significant contribution to the creation and development of the Anti-Terrorism Center and the national anti-terrorism system.

In 2014, the long-time head of the security police, Jānis Reiniks, announced that he decided to retire due to personal reasons. The Minister of the Interior Rihards Kozlovskis (JV) chose Mežvieta as his successor and the government accepted this candidacy.
