Pramod Pal, Gorakhpur: Floods have started wreaking havoc in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh. In the last two days, the water level of Rapti, Gorra, Ami, Rohin and Kuano rivers has increased and the rivers are above the danger mark. Some families affected by the floods have migrated to camps or safer places, while water has started entering the urban areas adjacent to the dam. The administration says that they are ready to deal with any emergency situation, the situation is completely under control right now.

Due to the rise in the rivers, 27 villages in and around Gorakhpur are affected by the floods, especially dozens of villages like Majharia, Takiya adjoining Nausadh are included in these. Due to water entering the houses, most of the people have migrated. Ujjwal Nishad, who lives in a village near Nausadh, says that sir, this is the story of every year, as soon as the rains begin, water is released from Nepal and the Rapti river starts rising. The effect of which is seen in the village every year.

Due to water entering, we, including Pawar, go to safer places. We get relief material from the administration and all the responsibilities are fulfilled. This has become a routine for us every year, now we have become used to it. Due to the flood, the houses are becoming dilapidated, there is no one to look after us.

Laxmina Devi, a resident of Takiya, says that due to floods, the elderly and small children along with animals face the most problems because due to water everywhere, the elderly and children are afraid of poisonous insects like snakes. At the same time, animals face a lot of problems due to not getting fodder. Water has entered our houses too, we are living with our families in relief camps set up by the government.

We have received relief material from the administration, but what is going to happen with this? We need a permanent solution. How long will we have to bear this trouble? Our houses are adjacent to the dam. Every year the government claims to spend crores of rupees, but we have to bear the brunt of the officials’ apathy every year. If the dam is strengthened, our fear will end to some extent.

Manoj Gupta of Disaster Management says that all rivers including Rapti are flowing above the danger mark. On Saturday evening, the water level of Rapti is 1 meter above the danger mark. The water released from Nepal in the coming days will further increase the water level of the rivers. At present, there is proper arrangement for the stay of refugees in the relief camps. Boats have been installed to rescue the people trapped in the flood. NDRF team is deployed everywhere. Relief material is being prepared by the officials on the orders of the DM. Along with this, medical camps have also been set up at various places, so that emergency situations can be dealt with.
