A group of American lawmakers shared with US President Joe Biden their concerns about his prospects as a Democratic candidate in the presidential election, according to a statement by Pramila Jayapal (D-Washington), leader of the progressive Democratic faction in the House of Representatives, Day.Az reports, citing TASS.
Biden met virtually with lawmakers on July 13, according to White House press pool reporters. “We spoke frankly to the president about our concerns and asked him tough questions about how to move forward,” Jayapal said in a statement. She said progressive Democratic lawmakers “will work to do everything we can to defeat” Republican Donald Trump.
In turn, Politico reported that several Democratic senators also met with Biden on July 11, where they expressed concerns about his ability to lead the United States for another four years. According to the publication, Senator John Fetterman (Pennsylvania) expressed support for Biden’s nomination as a Democratic candidate at the meeting, but only four members of the upper house of Congress who were present supported him.
On June 27, Biden and his Republican opponent Donald Trump held a televised debate in Atlanta, Georgia. According to a quick poll by CNN, two-thirds of viewers watching the debate awarded the victory to Trump. As reported by The Wall Street Journal, panic began among Democrats in Congress due to Biden’s unsuccessful performance in the televised debate. Some party representatives publicly called on the president to withdraw from the election race and give this opportunity to a younger politician.
The US presidential election will be held on November 5. Trump has already received the necessary number of delegates to be nominated as the Republican candidate for the post of head of state. Biden, running for a second term, has secured the support of a sufficient number of delegates from the Democratic Party. The nominees will be approved at the party conventions later in the summer.
