Increasing productivity through scientific progress is essential to achieving development in Latin America. This was one of the conclusions of the IV Conference on Science, Innovation and Technology of the Economic Commission for Latin America (ECLAC) which ended on Friday in Bogotá, the capital of Colombia.

One of the special guests at the event, Professor Carlo Pietrobelli of the UNESCO Chair at the University of Rome, stated that productivity “has been stagnant for many years” and cannot be a determining factor for economic growth in Latin America.

On the other hand, the Colombian Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Yesenia Olaya, also highlighted in statements the progress achieved during the conference.

Yesenia Olaya, Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation of Colombia:

«In these two days of dialogue we have reached common agreements: on the one hand, to strengthen scientific cooperation between the public and private sectors to strengthen national economies in Latin American countries. This is very important because increasing productivity on the basis of economic justice, on the basis of democratising access to knowledge and mobilising local economies, also implies strengthening the basis of technology and innovation in strengthening these economies.»

The IV Conference on Science, Innovation and Technology of the Economic Commission for Latin America (ECLAC), held from Thursday to Friday, April 5 in Bogotá, brought together 23 delegations from the 33 countries that make up ECLAC.
