After the European Championships comes the Olympics: In the next few weeks there will be border controls at the border with France to increase security.
Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) has ordered temporary border controls at the German-French border in order to ensure greater security before and during the Olympic Games in Paris together with the French authorities. These controls will be reported to the EU Commission shortly, the ministry announced. The games begin on July 26 and end on August 11.
However, from July 19, the controls introduced during the European Football Championship at the borders with Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg will be abolished. Here, it was announced, there will be a switch back to undercover surveillance with targeted controls. According to Faeser, however, border controls will continue to take place at the land borders with Austria, Switzerland, the Czech Republic and Poland in order to limit irregular migration and combat people smuggling.
Faeser was critical of demands from the CDU/CSU and FDP to maintain stricter controls at the borders with neighboring countries such as the Netherlands and Denmark even after the European Championships. Anyone who wants this must also be able to justify the serious consequences for commuters, travelers, trade and the economy – and explain how this is to be consistent with European law. These European legal requirements presuppose a serious threat to public order or internal security and only allow internal border controls for a limited period and as a last resort.
