LONDON, Waspada.co.id – Failing to win Euro 2024, Gareth Southgate officially resigned from his position as England national team coach as announced by the English Football Association (FA), Tuesday (16/7). In addition to Southgate, Steve Holland who was assistant coach also resigned.

“On behalf of English football, I would like to pay tribute to Gareth Southgate and Steve Holland for all they have achieved,” said FA chairman Mark Bullingham.

This is surprising news, because Southgate is quite successful in handling the Three Lions squad. The proof is, Harry Kane et al managed to become Euro finalists in two consecutive editions. Unfortunately, England was defeated by Spain 1-2 in the Euro 2024 final in Berlin, Monday (15/7).

Even so, Bullingham is also proud of Southgate’s achievements while handling the England National Team. Admittedly, the 53-year-old coach’s performance was truly brilliant while coaching his team.

“Gareth has made the impossible possible and laid a solid foundation for future success. He is hugely respected by the players, the backroom team, everyone at the FA and across the football world,” Bullingham said.

“We are extremely proud of everything Gareth and Steve have achieved for England, and will be forever grateful to them,” he said.

In 102 games as a manager, Southgate guided England to the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup and the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup, plus two runners-up finishes at the European Championship. (wol/aa/dailymail/d2)
