Iraqi Paralympics “tops” West Asian Championship: 64 colored medals, half of them gold

/ Today, Thursday, the Iraqi Paralympic delegation raised its tally of colored medals on the sixth day of the West Asia competitions, held in Oman, to reach 64 colored medals, half of which are gold, while the delegation’s achievements came in first place in the West Asia Championship competitions table.

The financial secretary of the West Asian Paralympic Federation, Majli Awda, said in a statement received by Shafak News Agency, “The executive office of the West Asian Federation held its first meeting this year to discuss several important issues and topics that would advance the federation to a better place in terms of holding tournaments and their technical, administrative and refereeing success, in addition to other technical matters related to the competitions.”

The financial secretary added, “One of the most important issues discussed by the federation is increasing the number of events and urging West Asian countries to increase the number of participating male and female players, and adding a female element to the executive office from each West Asian country to give more space to the female element in the executive office of the West Asian Federation, especially since women are an important element in establishing and building women’s sports. Then it was suggested to hold arbitration and classification courses on the sidelines of holding West Asian championships in addition to organizing individual international championships for West Asian countries with the participation of a number of West Asian countries that contribute to the development of Paralympic sports in West Asian countries.”

Awda concluded his speech by saying, “All the proposals discussed by the West Asian countries were approved, especially since this meeting is the first to be held at the beginning of this year, and we hope that these proposals will be implemented on the ground in the upcoming events, especially after the Sultanate of Oman was chosen as the venue for the next West Asian Championship in 2026.”

The statement explained that “the Athletics Federation has a total of colored medals after adding 19 colored medals yesterday, eight of which were gold medals that were won by Khader Abbas in the weight throw and javelin events, Hussein Hassan in the discus throw, Jarrah Nassar in the weight throw, Ahmed Ghani in the javelin throw, Mohammed Fahad in the 200m event, Ali Mubarak in the 200m event, and Nader Ibrahim in the 200m event. As for the seven silver medals, they were won by Salam Saheb in the weight throw and javelin events, Waldan Nizar in the javelin throw and weight throw events, Hussein Hassan in the javelin throw event, Zahraa Najah in the discus throw event, and Shaker Mahmoud in the 200m event. As for the bronze medals, which amounted to four medals, Zahraa Najah in the javelin throw event, Ahmed Ghani in the weight throw event, Kofan Hassan in the javelin throw event, and Idris Sami in the 200m event.”

The statement added, “The Table Tennis Federation’s total was five gold medals, two of which were won by Abdul Rahman Hekmat and Ali Abdul Amir, while the silver medals were won by Mohammed Kazim, Hadeel Ali, and Abbas Saleh.”

According to the statement, “Our blind goalball team will meet its Jordanian counterpart in the final match to determine the first and second places after defeating the Saudi team with a score of 11/5 in the match that took place between them this morning at the Blind Association Stadium,” indicating that “the Paralympic delegation’s tally reached 64 colored medals, including 32 gold medals, 24 silver medals, and 8 bronze medals, which placed it in first place in the West Asian Championship competition table, with the Emirati team in second place and Saudi Arabia in third place.”
