The Advance Directive Law aims to give Morelos residents the opportunity to decide in advance about their own lives in critical situations. By allowing terminally ill patients, older adults and people at risk of accidents to express their will not to artificially prolong their lives, the aim is to avoid unnecessary suffering and treatments that may affect their dignity.
With this measure, people who suffer from a terminal illness have the right to decide to die with dignity, or to continue with artificial procedures.
If a person chooses to end his or her life, it must always be done under authorized medical supervision.
The new law also facilitates access to this right through municipal Justice of the Peace Courts, allowing citizens to express their advance directives without incurring high costs, even in municipalities without public notaries.
