A man who stabbed a soldier at a train station in Paris, France, has been arrested by police.

According to AFP on the 15th (local time), French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin announced that a man in his 40s suspected of stabbing a soldier patrolling the Gare de l’Est in Paris with a weapon was arrested.

According to a police source, the soldier suffered a chest wound between his shoulder blades. He was taken to hospital conscious. “The soldier’s life is not in danger,” said Minister Darmanin.

The suspect was reportedly arrested by other soldiers on patrol after committing the crime just before 10 p.m. that night. The suspect is a 40-year-old man from the Democratic Republic of Congo who is said to have acquired French citizenship in 2006.

According to another police source, the man was reported to have shouted “I am a Christian” and “God is great” in French during the attack.

The man is also known to have a criminal record for stabbing a pedestrian with a weapon at a subway station in 2018. At the time, the man was hospitalized in a psychiatric hospital, but the court ruled that he was not legally responsible due to mental weakness.

Minister Darmanin wrote on social media, “I express my condolences for the injury of a soldier deployed as part of Operation Sentinel at the Gare de l’Est in Paris,” and “I would like to express my support and gratitude to our armed forces, who are dedicated more than ever to the safety of the French people.” Operation Sentinel is a special military operation conducted to protect sensitive sites such as major historical sites after the cartoon newspaper Charlie Hebdo was attacked in 2015 for its cartoons of the Islamic Prophet Muhammad.

The incident occurred at a time when France is on edge ahead of the Paris Olympics, which will be held on the 26th. In 2017, an Egyptian man attacked a soldier outside the Louvre Museum in Paris while shouting, “Allahu Akbar.”
