United Nations: A UN report has said that Tehrik-e Taliban Pakistan (TTP) remains the largest terrorist group in Afghanistan and its strong ties with al-Qaeda could turn it into a “transregional threat”.The 15th report of the Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team on Taliban and other associated individuals and entities said that TTP remains the largest terrorist group in Afghanistan and its fighters are estimated to number 6,000-6,500.The report said that one member state has raised concern that “the strong ties between TTP and al-Qaeda could turn TTP into a transregional threat”.It said that al-Qaeda’s support to TTP includes its “tashkeels” (contingents of fighters in this context) and sending Afghan fighters to training camps in Afghanistan. The training provided by al-Qaeda in the Indian subcontinent has resulted in a change in the strategy of TTP and it has carried out a number of major attacks.

Haqqani in supply of weapons

The report said, ‘One of the interlocutors mentioned the role of a person associated with Sirajuddin Haqqani in arms transfers to the TTP, as well as arranging the release of Islamic State (Khorasan) prisoners on the condition that they join the TTP.’ Haqqani is the Minister of Internal Affairs in the Taliban government in Afghanistan, which has been declared a global terrorist.

What is the claim of Taliban?

It said, ‘The Taliban has consistently claimed that there is no foreign terrorist group in Afghanistan except the Islamic State (Khorasan). But member countries have reported that more than 24 groups are active in this country.’ According to the report, ‘Many member countries have expressed concern that in most scenarios Afghanistan will remain a source of insecurity for Central Asia and the region.’ TTP continues to carry out attacks in Pakistan. Hundreds of people have been killed due to this.
