A new powerful flare occurred on the Sun, it did not become a record in this cycle, but surpassed in power all the explosions that had previously occurred on the star this summer.
As reported by Day.Az with reference to Russian media, this was stated by the head of the Solar Astronomy Laboratory of the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Sergei Bogachev.
“The second flare of the highest X level has been registered on the Sun in two days. The event has been assigned the X1.9 rating. The flare is approximately 4 times weaker than the record-breaking event in this cycle – the X8.7 flare that occurred on May 14, but it has nevertheless become the largest event on the Sun for the entire summer period,” Bogachev said.
He specified that solar activity began to increase noticeably around July 12. Over the past four days, there have been more than 10 M-level flares (the fourth most powerful level of solar events on a five-point scale), as well as two X-level flares (including today’s). The first flare reached level X1.2 on July 14. The maximum force of the explosion was recorded today at around 16:30 Moscow time (17:30 Baku time – ed.).
“The consequences of the explosive events on the Sun will probably be observed until the end of the day. At the moment, there is no information about solar mass ejections towards the Earth. However, the location of the explosive center does not exclude such a possibility. Precise information about the possible consequences for the Earth will appear within a few hours,” Bogachev said.
