Daniel, a sixty-year-old disabled Frenchman, told France-Bleu that he had worked for 46 years on a farm near Bergerac without receiving any payment.

It is said that the man started working at the age of 16. “I was a slave, a servant, I had to do all the work, 24 hours a day… I did everything, from six in the morning to midnight. I hardly went out“, he confided to our colleagues. In the absence of a salary, Daniel was given life and whitewashed. Now 65 years old and recognized as mentally disabled, the sixty-year-old could neither read nor write.I couldn’t say anything, I was thinking in my head but I was afraid“, he continues.

Farmers’ wages: what a worrying report reveals

It was on finding out that he would only be entitled to 112 euros when he retired, two years ago, that Daniel decided to respond. “These are the years of work, it is impossible to work so much for nothing“, he exclaims.

However, the family that gave him “work” confirmed a good retirement. In fact, only some of his hours were confirmed. “They took advantage of his mental concerns. They humiliated him, he had no life as a man, no family life“, explains Eliane Lercier, its curator.

Unfortunately for Daniel, his complaint filed in 2023 will not be successful since the owner of the farm has died. A procedure is still underway with the main party demanding 390,000 euros in compensation.
