Former US President Donald Trump was the victim of an assassination attempt while he was holding a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Two people were killed in the attack, including the alleged perpetrator, last night. Trump was quickly evacuated from the scene by the Secret Service, which has denied having refused requests for additional security.
Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said in a brief statement that reports of denial of additional security resources for Trump’s rally are false. “We added protective resources, technology and capabilities due to the increased pace of campaign travel,” Guglielmi said.
The Holy See has expressed its concern about the attack, stressing that it “hurts people and democracy, causing suffering and death.” In a statement, the Vatican joined the prayers of the American bishops for America, the victims and peace in the country, and asked that the reasons of the violent ones not prevail.
Antonio Peláez, a journalist who was filming a documentary at the rally, said he heard the shots but initially ignored them until he saw people leaving the venue. His testimony offers a first-hand view of the chaos experienced during the attack.
Journalist Emilio Doménech of newtral.es reported that Republican merchandising with the image of Trump raising his fist moments after the assassination attempt already exists. “Stores in cities like New York are already selling T-shirts with this image,” Doménech said, and he did not rule out Trump using this image in his campaign.
Oscar Vara said on the Al Rojo Vivo program that Trump’s chances of winning the election have increased after the assassination attempt. According to Kiko Llaneras, a data specialist at El País, Trump’s chances of being elected have risen from 60% to 75%.
The US correspondent for laSexta described the campaign as “aggressive,” posing a choice between democracy and its end. He highlighted the toxic atmosphere in a heavily armed country, pointing out the surprising ease with which the attacker was able to approach Trump.
